Commercial Truck Driver Class taking last-minute applications

Classes will begin Tuesday, Sept.7, for Beaufort County Community College's Commercial Truck Driver Training Program, with classes offered at a more affordable price for students, thanks to a grant from the JobsNOW program.
Graduates of BCCC's truck driving school can expect to earn between $25,000 and $35,000 their first year of work, according to David Crosby, director of fire training programs and special projects at BCCC.
The truck driver program is operated by BCCC's Division of Continuing Education and will provide the opportunity for students to learn the skills needed to drive a combination vehicle, or tractor-trailer, and obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License, or CDL.
Classes will be held 6 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning Tuesday, Sept. 7, and ending Thursday, Dec. 2. Class sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays will be held in Building 7 on the BCCC campus. Class on Wednesdays will be held in Room 823 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. Driving practice will be 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
The program will include classroom instruction, range work and behind-the-wheel driving of a Class A combination. Students will gain experience driving during various hours of the day and night.
The program will also include class work that will prepare students to earn the nationally-recognized Career Readiness Certificate, or CRC, that will complement and enhance their job qualifications.
A total of $230 is required at the time of registration. The registration fee is $175 which includes which includes the class and two initial road tests. A $25 fee for random drug testing and a $30 fee for CRC testing are also due at the time of registration. The charge for an additional road test, if needed, is $125.
The required textbook is $50; road atlas, $25.25; log book, $6.75; and log book trainer, $4.50. They are available at the BCCC Book Store.
All students in the Truck Driver Training Program are required to have their CDL Permit, Department of Transportation Health Card and drug test before registering for the course. In addition, students will be subject to random drug screening throughout the course.
Class size is limited to 24 students. The course will begin on the scheduled date and time pending sufficient student enrollment for the class. Otherwise, the course may be postponed or cancelled.
